Well we are living in interesting times. We have all seen or heard things that have made us question everything, and if you are like me questioning the question. The noise was deafening across the board in 2016. Much of what was said and done affected my sensibilities in ways I never thought possible. However during it all I had peace.
This beautiful sunny, cold morning I was speaking with a man who was buying some Aloe Vera plants that we grow here at Bedrock Farm. As he was explaining his work ethic & that of others, he said something I found so profound that I felt the need to share it. "Work today for a better tomorrow." While most of us work for money, I am reminded that we cannot take any of our worldy possesions with us when our year is up. What does it cost to give it away? Nothing, it's liberating. Perhaps we can take the words of this humble man to heart and if his words are not enough inspiration listen to the Queens words.
Making a small effort can have a big impact. This is not a collective ideology but a community mentality. It is my wish that we all have hope in the future. Not the hope that we are told we get from whomever is/is not holding public office, or the holder of the purse strings of the company we work for, etc. We are all just mere mortals here on this earth, but real hope comes from the God of the Universe, no matter the name from which you call upon that hope. Look around you. There are miracles every day, you just have to look for it.
Perhaps it is as simple as this "work today, for a better tomorrow" we will manifest the peace and prosperity that we all desire.
Boy we are off to an interesting start this New Year!
2016 has definitely started off with much strife, but we do not need to get caught up in the bellicose nature of what is taking place. It is important to remember the God is in Control. Super hard for someone like me but what are the options? Looking at a hu-man and thinking that they are going to solve all of our problems or that of the world is insanity.
The best way to start each day is with the serenity prayer "God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change that which I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference." So I get down on my knees and pray, pray, pray and don't forget to Repent. It is truly only God's grace that gives us peace.
These are God's words to us and are freely given. There is no reason to fret. We have been given a conscience for a reason and our souls are waiting to be fed.
There is always hope and miracles surround us every day. Just step outside rain or shine and there is new life and Spring is just around the corner.
I hope that everyone had a peace filled Thanksgiving. We are truly blessed in America. There are no food shortages that we can see at this time, but this might not always be the case. So even though we have entered into the cold months of winter it is important to keep our gardens and livestock in the front of our thoughts. If you have never given thought to composting it is a simple process. Just lay a tarp on the ground & put all of those leaves on it. Cover with the corners of the tarp and throw a rock on it so that it doesn't blow in the wind. If you are lucky enough to have livestock throw in their waste into the mix and voila by spring with a few days of sun you should have some very nice compost to add to your pots, garden beds or yard. You can also as food scraps, coffee grinds and ash from the fireplace. There are so many simple things we can do to be more self sufficient and by using what we have live a more sustainable life. As for livestock it is important to make sure that they are drinking water on the cold days.
Health related information that has helped my fight obesity, diabetes and just plain old getting old. When someone asks how you are doing you can
honestly say "I am dilapidating at a normal rate" and you cannot ask for anything more. "Knowledge is Power"and many times the answer lies
within our food and what we put into and on our bodies. http://www.anh-usa.org/hhs-says-supplements-send-23000-people-to-the-hospital-er-each-year/
Every year as a society we are pulled in a million different directions during this so called holiday time of year. When I feel as if I am being pulled by the force known as consumerism, I ask myself, who is pulling me & why I should or should not go in that direction? I am not a scrooge, I still enjoy many of the elements of the season: time with friends, the beautiful lights, the food & the time me & my family spend in serving others.
However, the electric pull of consumerism hits everyone, so I have made some different choices for my family because, I am not a scrooge. My children will still get a few surprises (from Santa) and many things they need this time of year to finish the school year strong. We enjoy the delicious food that everyone looks forward too this time of year. We share our blessings with those whom we know & whom we do not know and the frantic pace that has been set by those drivers of consumerism are held at bay. We seek the good in people & try to share the light, knowing the history of where the tradition of Christmas has come from. We take the parts that work for us & incorporate them into our family traditions but leave many of the others out & I can truly say that it is a peace filled time for us. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year and ask that you remember that "Jesus is the reason for the season."
In my home it is important to me that my family can rest secure in knowing that we can provide food for ourselves. This seems like a simple enough thing when there is a grocery store on most corners, but what happens if the store cannot get the food products needed to support the needs of their customers? We are spoiled by the ease at which we can go to the market & purchase anything our hearts desire. Growing your own food does not need to be difficult & you don't need to have acres of land to grow your own food.
What happens when commercial growing operations are unable to meet the needs of an ever growing population? When my family lived on a 10,000 square foot lot we were able to grow much of our own food & that is when I purchased my first chickens. Chickens are the easiest livestock to have in small spaces & offer hours & hours of entertainment, and as an added bonus you get fresh eggs. Just don't get a rooster if you live in the city. Fresh eggs are the best and you know what your chickens are eating, as well as what you are eating. They keep your yard clean & the bugs at bay naturally and most of your food waste can be eliminated. It is a win, win for you & your family, offering you peace of mind that seems harder & harder to achieve in this day & age.
The chart above shows where a majority of our food comes from. If you do not like the course that our country is on I encourage you to vote with your dollars by not supporting these companies. To take it a step further support companies that allow their employees the ability to say "Merry Christmas."
Why are we now seeing the cost of gasoline being lower than a pound of butter? I have yet to figure it out but food insecurity is becoming an issue that we cannot ignore. If we limit our purchases to staples (grains, coffee, sugar) that are not easy to grow yourself and start small by growing some of the foods we consume regularly ourselves, perhaps it will impact how many of these corporations conduct business? One can hope.
Well the "holiday season" is upon us & for most of the mother's I know it is not much of a holiday. Santa Claus has big shoes to fill & it is usually done by a woman wearing size 7 shoes. I cannot believe that I am already witnessing marketing for Christmas shopping before we have even celebrated Thanksgiving. Please watch THE REAL PILGRIM STORY above & share it with your friends & family. This changed my perspective & changed how our family celebrates. I have read that many people are upset that they are going to have to work on the up coming holidays. I cannot say that I blame them. I remember "back in the day" when if you did not plan ahead your only option was to go to a 7Eleven to pick up the missing ingredient while paying an arm & a leg for it. Lack of planning should come at a price. Since we are so caught up in the commercialization of these reverent family times instead of even acknowledging the reason for the season "Jesus is the reason for the Season" I encourage you to shop with a conscience. Here is the "Naughty & Nice" stores that allow their employees to say "Merry Christmas." I have been anti-crap from China for decades & I encourage you to do the same while supporting corporations that hold the family values you agree with. During this holiday season my family & I will volunteer to help at many non-profit events to mark our support for our community & our fellow human beings.
Everything we do and say is important. God is watching you no matter what God you serve. If Christmas becomes a time of chaos & confusion please remember that "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" otherwise what message are we giving our children & the world? Children see everything & we have to wonder what we want them to believe. Want to read more about my thoughts during this so called "Holiday Season?" read my book which is available on Amazon
DOUBLE STANDARDS & THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF CHRIST
I am a wife, mother & friend, first and foremost. Being good at all of these things takes work. The "grace" to handle all of these things come from God.
